UK wine importers, Barwell & Jones, has taken on the premium Chilean wine producer, Morandé, to help it in its bid to widen distribution across the specialist independent on and off-trades.

It will be working with the producer over the coming months to introduce its range of varietal, Reserva, Grand Reserva and Edicion Limitada wines to the UK through a number of regional wholesalers including Coe Vintners in London and St Austell in the south west.

Morandé, which previously was distributed in the UK through Bottle Green, said they were confident they had the range, the quality and the competitive pricing to make them attractive to independent on and off-trade buyers.

Angus Macnab, sales development manager at Barwell & Jones, is well placed to position the range as he has spent much of the last decade as a sommelier, most recently at The Lanesborough. He told Harpers: "I hope I can talk to sommeliers their language."

Carlos Spoerer, Morandé's export director, said the challenge for Chile was to do the opposite of what Argentine wines have achieved in the UK. "We need to get much stronger in the on-trade and specialist areas with our premium wines. There are so many good quality wines in Chile with the freshness and fruit and cool climate that work so well in these areas."

The Morandé range will consist of the varietal Pionero range consisting of a series of wines priced at £7.49-£7.99 for the off-trade and £20-£22 on wine lists. It includes Sauvignon Blanc from Curico Valley and Pinot Noir from Casablanca.

Its Grand Reserva range includes a Syrah, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a RRP for £11.99 for independents and £35 on wine lists.
Its Edicion Limitada has a Carignan, Cabernet Franc and barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc in its line up with a £15.49 RRP and £45 on restaurant lists.
