Bodega Argento launches new organic UK off-trade brand

Published:  07 January, 2020

Argentinian producer Bodega Argento has begun the roll-out of its new Artesano de Argento off-trade brand with the release of its Organic Malbec-Cabernet Franc 2018 through Sainsbury’s.

The single-vineyard wine is a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are sourced from the winery’s Alto Agrelo (Luján de Cuyo) vineyard in Mendoza and is certified both organic and Fairtrade.

Bodega Argento is the largest producer of organic wine in Mendoza, according to certification agency Argencert. It currently has 305ha of organic-certified vineyards in the region, up from 44ha in 2014.

Juan Pablo Murgia, chief winemaker at Bodega Argento, said: “Fruit purity, expression of terroir, quality and environmental awareness are the pillars of Bodega Argento’s winemaking philosophy. With Artesano de Argento, we pay homage to the artisan traditions of Argentina.

“Our organic winemaking approach shares the same respect for tradition, the land and quality craftsmanship. I believe that making wines organically is the way to get the absolute best out of Argentina’s unique environment.”

Georgina Haughton, wine buyer at Sainsbury’s, said: “With sales of Argentinian red up 14% year on year at Sainsbury’s, we’re continuing to see our customers explore wines from this area.

Cabernet Franc is one of the most exciting grapes that we’ve tried from Argentina so we’re thrilled to be able to introduce it to Sainsbury’s expanding collection.”

The Artesano de Argento Organic Malbec-Cabernet Franc 2018 will be available at Sainsbury’s both in-store and online from 16 January 2020 and will retail at £10 a bottle.
