Maison & Domaines Les Alexandrins acquires Le Domaine de Bréseyme

Published:  28 November, 2018

Maison & Domaines Les Alexandrins – based at Tain l’Hermitage, has acquired Brézème estate Bréseyme for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition, which follows Maison & Domaines Les Alexandrins having developed the Crozes Hermitage and Saint Joseph appellations over the last few years, would enable the estate to “pursue growth and increase production”, said the new owner.

Founded in 1999 by the Gresse family, Bréseyme currently cultivates four hectares of "Brézème" Côtes du Rhône and four and a half hectares of PGI Collines Rhodaniennes.

“With a 16-hectare land reserve, the estate will be able to pursue its growth and increase the production of these fine wines,” said Nicolas Jaboulet, who collaborated with fellow Northern Rhône producers Guillaume Sorrel and Alexandre Caso in 2012 to form "Domaine & Maison Les Alexandrins.

"Brézème is a real gem of the region, a jealously guarded little garden producing top quality wines. Quantities are small and bottles hard to come by. It was precisely this rather mysterious quality that immediately appealed to us as we are always keen on discovering new terroirs and making new wines,” he said.

The goal was to demonstrate to the world that” this forgotten terroir in the north of the Rhône Valley deserves as much attention as its illustrious neighbors”, he added.

“Although Brézème is still relatively unknown, its slopes and its terroir are steeped in history. Vines have been grown on the Brézème hillsides since the Middle Ages, planted on the south facing slopes of hills that rise up to 256 meters altitude with Mount Rôti,” he said.

Covering a total of 40 hectares in 1813, the vineyards were almost entirely wiped out by the Phylloxera epidemic before being resurrected. Today, 27 hectares are cultivated out of a possible 80, four for white and 23 for red.
