Volume and value shipments to the UK on a roll for Portugal

Over the past year, sales of Portuguese DO wines to the UK have increased by 37.1% in value – an increase, officials say, which has been driven by an even more substantial 45.8% increase in volume (26,124 hl in 2016 compared to 38,100 hl in 2017).

The figures were announced at the Wines of Portugal Grand Tasting in London yesterday, where representatives of the official body said the figures are in line with a growing perception of “quality and value” of Portuguese still wines around the world.

Jorge Monteiro, president of ViniPortugal, said: “The consistent growth of Portuguese still wine imports to the UK is a reflection of our continued commitment to driving awareness of these wines. Whilst these wines are still an emerging category in the UK, this positive trend proves that consumers are still keen to discover the quality and versatility that Portuguese wine has to offer.”

Portuguese wine is still something of a niche category in the UK.

It is the world’s eleventh biggest wine producing country behind Italy, France Spain, the US, Australia, China, Chile, South Africa, Argentina and Germany (OIV, October 2016 figures).

Around 85 producers exhibited at yesterday’s tasting which aimed to show the “fun and colourful” side of Portugal according to organisers, with masterclasses, speed-tastings hosted by Dirceu Vianna Junior MW, and a new restaurant area, which matched international dishes with Portuguese wines.
