Catering exec and wine enthusiast dies in tragic plane crash

Published:  02 January, 2018

The foodservice industry is mourning the loss of one of its giants this morning, as the world media reports the tragic loss of Richard Cousins, CEO of catering company Compass Group.

Cousins, 58, tragically passed away with four members of his close family on the afternoon of December 31, when a seaplane carrying the party from a pre-New Year’s Eve celebration crashed and sank into a river outside Sydney.

The pilot was also killed.

Cousins, who was known as a man who enjoyed both food and wine, became group chief executive in 2006, spearheading the company which now operates catering services in over 50 countries.

The group is known in the UK for partnering with some of our leading chefs, including Jason Atherton at City Social and Temple & Sons.

Atherton acts as a consultant chef for the group via subsidiary company Restaurants Associates, which also runs the Michelin-starred City Social in Tower 42 and its sister restaurant, two AA Rosette awarded Temple and Sons, as two of its restaurant partnerships.

Restaurants Associates also runs Roux fine dining in Parliament Square in partnership with Michel Roux Jr and Albert Roux OBE.

Restaurateur and caterer Prue Leith of Leith’s Dining is also one of the group’s consultant chefs.
