Mezcal and English sparkling tipped as the top tipples for 2018

Rising popularity of premium Languedoc Rousillion, Tequila and Mezcal as well as soaring sales of English sparkling have puts these tipples at the head of the race to be named some of the top trends for 2018.

Alternative French regions such as Anjou and Saumur in the Loire as well as more premium wine from Languedoc Roussillon both featured prominently in a new report from on-trade suppliers Bibendum on what’s going to be big next year.

English sparkling also feature, following reports from Bibendum that sales have nearly doubled over the past year.

Joseph Arthur, fine wine business development executive at the supplier, said they had seen a sigificant change in 2017, from “getting the word out to consumers” to

customers proactively asking for English wine.

Other key trends include spirits with provenance, including craft vodka and also Tequila and Mezcal with consumers move towards premium serves and cocktails.

Finally, consumer demand for lower alcohol cocktails is expected to strengthen while ‘Shim’ drinks, which use sherry, vermouth, sake and port are likely to be used more alternatives to hard spirits like vodka and gin,

Darren Flanagan, Bibendum business development executive said: “Fortified wines are getting a lot more love in bars and following the rise of serving sherry and vermouth with tonic, white port is the next natural extension.”
