Simpsons Wine Estate launches first wine

Published:  16 May, 2017

A Kent vineyard has launched its first wine after planting its first vines in 2014.

Chardonnay is the first launch from husband and wife team Charles and Ruth Simpson whose first harvest at their Roman Road vineyard took place last October.

This is the first English wine venture for the couple, who have been making wine in the Languedoc at Domaine Sainte Rose, for the past 15 years.

In 2012, they invested in 90 acres of land in Barham, Kent, where the Roman Road vineyard now stands.

According to co-founder Charles Simpson, a small quantity of Chardonnay was set aside for the estate’s first still wine, with plans to continue to release small batches of Chardonnay.

A run of 680 bottles have been produced from the chalk soils, some of which will be available to sample at the London Wine Fair’s Esoterica section next week.

The estate’s first sparkler will be released in December 2018.
