Christmas came early for Malbec at Concha y Toro

Published:  21 February, 2017

The nation's thirst for Argentinian wine has showed no signs of being quenched with Concha y Toro reporting sparkling Christmas sales for Bodega Trivento.

Driven by the dominant Malbec tipple, the Chilean producer saw an impressive 43.6% hike in sales to £27.8m for the portfolio on volumes up 40%, according to IRI (52 w/e to 31 December 2016).

This was on the back of a healthy average £6.27 bottle price - up 14p versus last year, and in a still wine category down 1.8%, on the backdrop of a 2.1% volume decline in the same period.

Christmas proved particularly fruitful for Bodega Trivento as value sales boomed 74.8% in the four weeks to December 31, 2016.

To keep the momentum going, Concha y Toro had some "exciting plans" in the pipeline for Trivento Bodega for this year, but details of the activity was still under wraps, said brand manager Natasha Erlandson - adding Malbec was on course to become a top 10 variety in the UK.

"These latest figures are very good news, and show how strong the Malbec wave continues to be," she said,

Earlier this month, wine importer Buckingham Schenk reported a 19% increase in annual turnover, which it in part contributed to the popularity of Argentinian Malbec.
