Top of the pops: Fizz leads the top trends for Christmas and beyond

The enduring success of sparkling ignited by consumers' unquenchable thirst for Prosecco over the past decade is already reaching into 2017 where it will be pushing new boundaries.

Italian sparkling wine as a category has seen 48% growth at Matthew Clark since November 2015 (Matthew Clark MAT to end of November 2016) and the supplier is backing the wider sparkling category to grow and diversify as the New Year comes round.

Looking ahead to next year's trends, Tiffany Mogg, wine supplier manager at Matthew Clark, said that though the big brands 'deliver on quality', offering something that the consumer doesn't recognise isn't necessarily a big risk.

Branching out from Italy and the dominance of Prosecco, Matthew Clark has added a number of boutique and heritage brands to its sparkling portfolio - including Cavas from Villa Conchi winery - a Crémant d'Alsace from Domaine Zinck and a cap classique from Kleine Zalze in response to a 40% growth in sales of South African sparklers.

The challenge facing sparkling in 2017 will be to keep the momentum going as consumers become more willing to incorporate bubbles into increasingly diverse moments rather than just on certain special occasions.

Mogg predicted that going into the holiday season and into 2017, consumers will be doing just that, demanding sparkling wines which can "handle the bar, the toasts and see through an entire three course meal".

"Cue quality méthode traditionelle wines from the old and new world, like the popular English fizzes from Chapel Down, and the delicate Château de Montguéret Saumur Brut.

"Springy and refreshing spumantes, like those from family-owned wineries Rocco Venezia and Gancia will also create a talking point and last out the festive season," she said.
