Popular b.f.t. organiser Ben Campbell-Johnston passes away

Published:  02 November, 2016

Respected and much-liked stalwart of the trade, Ben Campbell-Johnston, will be missed by the trade

Popular wine trade figure Ben Campbell-Johnston passed away at his home in Kent at the weekend.

Best known for his knowledge, love and support for and of fortified wines, Ben was a much-respected face in the trade, most recently known for being the driving force behind The Big Fortified Tasting (the b.f.t.), which he co-founded, along with the sparkling wine event Fizz.

Ben's career spanned many successful years at Fells, also having worked with the Symington Family, to whom he was related, and began - as with many of his generation - with a formative stint at Oddbins.

He was also a passionate and instructive taster with a deep knowledge of Port, Madeira and other fortified wines, doing much to promote understanding and the pleasure surrounding these classics.

Many at Harpers had the pleasure of experiencing Ben's humour and take on life first hand, always treating his subject with respect, while never forgetting that wine - and life - is supposed to be fun.

Ben Campbell-Johnston will be much missed by both his family and the trade.
