Berkmann Wine Cellars teams up with Marlborough wine producer

Published:  23 September, 2016

Berkmann Wine Cellars will become the exclusive agent in the UK for New Zealand producer, Mahi Wines.

From October 1, the Marlborough wine producer will join the independent wholesaler's existing New Zealand portfolio alongside Coopers Creek, Julicher Estate from Martinborough, Mount Holdsworth in Wairarapa and Bannockburn Bridge in Central Otago.

From their first vintage in 2001, Mahi have set out to highlight the individuality of Marlborough's valleys through single vineyard wines and regional blends.

The range will feature a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir alongside the single vineyard wines, Boundary Farm Sauvignon Blanc and Twin Valleys Chardonnay.

Alex Hunt MW, purchasing director at Berkmann Wine Cellars, said: "We are delighted to welcome Mahi Wines to our portfolio. What struck us in particular was the texture of these wines; while far from heavy, they have a sense of substance that places them among the very best in Marlborough."

Mahi Wines' owner and winemaker, Brian Bicknell, has been involved in the making of over 20 vintages worldwide.

"Being in Marlborough it is pretty easy to make fruity wines - our growing conditions dictate it - but the goal is not to be trapped by fruit but to use it in a way that adds to the palate and length of the wine. We really do make wines to be shared at the table so Berkmann's strength and expertise in the premium on-trade, alongside such an impressive line-up of quality family producers, make them an ideal partner," he said.

Berkmann Wines was founded in 1964 to supply Joseph Berkmann's group of restaurants with Bordeaux, Burgundy and Beaujolais - and became the exclusive agency for Georges Duboeuf in 1972.
