Virgin Wines to offer free next day delivery for WineBank members

Published:  27 July, 2016

Virgin Wines has announced it will be offering free next day delivery for all WineBank members in an effort to attract more customers to the loyalty scheme.

"Our WineBank scheme is already the best way wine enthusiasts can purchase wine in the UK, but we are always trying to improve everything we do and free next day delivery with no strings attached is the one thing our customers tell us they want most," said Jay Wright, CEO of Virgin Wines.

The WineBank scheme has doubled is membership over the past 12 month from 30,000 to 60,000 members following a recent revamp.

The free next day delivery option is part of a larger plan to grow the programme by an additional 40,000 members over the next financial year.

Wine online is becoming increasingly competitive and the importance of offering different delivery options is a way retailers are trying to differentiate themselves.

"We are determined to give our customers the very best service and value we can and unlimited free delivery will help us stand out from the crowd even further and gives customers a very real and tangible benefit," said Wright.

The WineBank is a loyalty scheme where customer contribute a chosen amount of money into an online account that can be spent or withdrawn at any time.

For each £5 a customer contributes to their account, Virgin Wines will contribute an additional £1.

Online wine sales is a major opportunity for wine retailers as more customers move online to shop.

Wine Intelligence released a report early this year which found that in 2015 wine sales online hit approximately £800m.

A quarter of the 29.6 million regular wine drinkers ordered wine online last year and on average the 7.4 million customers spent £7 per bottle.

Online wine sales accounted for 11% of total wine market purchases last year, but that is expected to grow to 14% over the next three years, according to the Wine Intelligence report.
