Drinks connoisseurs looking to increase their knowledge of one Europe's oldest spirits can sign-up for a professional one-day course, which is returning to London following a sold out event in New York.

The Bureau National Interprofessionnel de l'Armagnac (BNIA) has run successful Armagnac Acadamies all over the world, including the UK, since it began in 2013.

It will be returning to the English capital on Tuesday, May 17, at the traditional Soho Whisky Club, on Old Compton Street.

The course will be presented by official Armagnac educator Edward Bates and Amanda Garnham from the BNIA.

The educational programme is a tasting and learning event for sommeliers, importers, bartenders and wine and spirit merchants.

During the one-day event, participants learn about the Armagnac region in France, its culture and the history of Armagnac.

So far six events have been held; two in London, one in Beijing, one in Guangzhou and in New York with a total of approximately 200 candidates taking part worldwide.

A total of 38 candidates took part in the course in New York at the Astor Centre at the beginning of March, where guest speaker Jillian Vose from the Dead Rabbit in lower Manhattan explained how Armagnac can be used in cocktails.

Students of Armagnac Academies sit a multiple choice exam at the end of the course, with the goal of achieving an official diploma.

The candidate with the highest score at the London event will win a trip to Armagnac as a guest of the BNIA to experience the distillation process first hand.

Places are limited to a maximum of 30 people and the day's tuition and tastings cost £100 per person.

The day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 6pm.
