Berry Bros & Rudd in promotional drive for Virginia Wines

Published:  26 February, 2016

Berry Bros & Rudd customers who buy a six-bottle mixed case of Virginia wines may win a four-night trip to the wineries of Virginia, as part of a promotion with Virginia Wine which will run throughout March.

Virginia is the now the fifth-largest grape-producing state in the US, and both its terroir and climate provide enormous opportunities for winemaking across the whole state.

The mixed case, which will retail at £115, will contain two wines from Breaux Vineyards, the Equation X Red and Viognier 2014.

Breaux Vineyards, one of Virginia's fastest growing wineries, which has some 104 acres under vine in the north of the state overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The case also includes a Petit Verdot 2013 from the 50-acre Veritas Winery in Virginia's central Monticello region.

Catriona Felstead MW, buyer at BBR, said: "Virginia wines have great potential, especially if you know what you are looking for. We have been most impressed by white wines made from Viognier and red wines made from varieties whose roots lie in Bordeaux.

"As our mixed-case demonstrates, there are some truly elegant, structured and unquestionably drinkable wines coming out of this fascinating state."

Virginia Wine is represented in the UK by New Horizon Wines, which is partnering with Berry Bros & Rudd on the promotion.

Christopher Parker, managing director of New Horizon Wines, said: "We are delighted to be working with Berry Bros. & Rudd in this promotion to introduce this selection to their customers and to raise awareness of the wines of Virginia."

London-born Parker has lived in Virginia for 26 years and has been actively involved in developing its wine trade since 2008.

Berry Bros & Rudd, best known as wine merchants to the royal family, doubled pre-tax losses to £11.4 million in 2015, its third sequential year of losses.

The company, which was established in 1698, appointed Dan Jago, former group wine director at Tesco, as its new chief executive in October.

It recently also added a fourth room for private events at its St James Street headquarters with the opening of the Sussex Cellar.
