Cotswolds Distillery signs major Australian distribution deal

Published:  14 December, 2015

UK super-premium Cotswolds Dry Gin is to be distributed in Australia by Woolworths supermarkets and the Woolworth's Liquor Group.

Woolworths is Australia's largest supermarket, with nearly 900 stores.

The Woolworth's Liquor Group includes the Dan Murphy's retail chain, which boasts 46% share of the Australian drinks market, along with BWS, ALH Hotels and the Wine Quarter.

Daniel Szor, owner of The Cotswolds Distillery said: "I have been working closely with John Jeffrey, our sales, export and logistics director, to secure this deal for almost eight months.

"Our initial research was carried out on a visit to Australia in November 2014 and it is a testament to the quality and positioning of the brand that we have secured this deal.

"We are tremendously excited to be working with the Woolworth liquor group and we're looking forward to a successful launch in Australia next year."

Although Australian spirits sales by volume declined by 1% in 2015, sales by value grew 2%, reflecting the same trend towards premiumisation evident elsewhere in the world, according to Euromonitor.

The average number of monthly gin drinkers in Australia has grown by 36% in the last five years and now stands at 860,000.

The Cotswolds Distillery opened in 2014 and its award-winning gin won listings in Majestic and Oddbins earlier this year.

The company recently launched a £500,000 crowdfunding campaign to invest in its whisky production.

It was also chosen by the UKTI to feature in a government-backed gin trade promotion in the US this autumn.

The first bottles of Cotswold Dry Gin will arrive in Australia next months ahead of a full store launch in spring.
