R&B crowd-sources location for new Borders distillery

Published:  03 August, 2015

Scottish whisky producer R&B Distillers is asking its customers to choose a location for a new distillery in the Borders. If completed, it will be the first distillery in the region since 1837.

Whisky drinkers are being asked to select their preferred location in an online poll. Popular choices include the Tweed Valley, Peebles, Kelso, Melrose, Galashiels and Eyemouth.

The poll can be found at http://bit.ly/bordersdistillerypoll. Voting will last for three months and the winning location will be announced in November.

Alasdair Day, co-founder of R&B, said: "It's really quite remarkable that somewhere as iconic as the Scottish Borders has remained untouched by whisky distilling for such a long time.

"Just like whiskies from the Highlands, Speyside or Islay, a small batch whisky distilled in the Borders will have its own unique flavour, informed by the provenance and terroir of the region."

Work on the project will not begin until the company's distillery on the Hebridean island of Raasay is operational.

The Raasay is planned to open in January 2017. It will be the island's first distillery and is expected to generate employment for eleven of the island's 120 residents.

The first whisky - a lightly peated single malt - is due from Raasay in 2020.
