German wine promotion gives venues and stores Rieslings to be cheerful

Published:  16 July, 2015

Germany's favourite wine grape is in the spotlight with leading restaurants and retailers taking part in the 31 Days of German Riesling campaign.

Several Gordon Ramsay restaurants are involved in food and wine pairing activity along with London's Chez Bruce, The Clove Club, Hakkasan and Grain Store.

The capital's off-trade is in on the act too with Vagabond Wines and Theatre of Wine offering discounts and tastings on Riesling wines.

Staff at Sheldon's Wine Cellar in Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire, have pledged to wear traditional German lederhosen for the month-long duration of the promotion.

The best retailer and best restaurant will each win £1,000 towards German wine listings, with £500 sums for the runners-up in each category.

There's a consumer competition to win a weekend break to Germany on the campaign website, which also includes links to participating shops and restaurants and information about German Riesling.

Nicky Forrest, Wines of Germany's managing director in the UK, said: "Last year, 101 restaurants and retailers and 15,000 consumers from all over the country got involved.

"It's a lot of fun and consumers are always amazed by the versatility and food matching potential of the wines.

"This year, we are seeing more Michelin restaurants getting involved so it's going to be another great summer of Riesling."

Retailers and restaurants can still sign up to take part at 31daysofgermanriesling.co.uk.
