Romanian producer Cramele Recas doubles bottling capacity to meet surge in demand

Published:  29 June, 2015

Romania's largest wine producer is spending €2 million on an upgrade to its packaging facilities to double its capacity.

Cramele Recas said the move was in response to a surge in sales globally, including the UK where it has won new listings with Londis, Nisa, Asda, Mitchells & Butlers, Greene King, Adnams and Matthew Clark.

The company exports 4.2 million bottles annually to the UK and it claims to produce the biggest-selling Pinot Grigio in the UK, though the wine is sold under a variety of labels.

The new bottling line will come on stream in November as part of an increase in annual investment in vineyards and winery equipment.

Cramele Recas director Philip Cox said: "With all this infrastructure in place we are confident we can meet the growing demand for Romanian wines."

The producer saw global sales increase by 15% in 2014 to €25 million and it is excepting to grow this by a fifth again during 2015 to go through the €30 million barrier.

It is hoping that a partnership with German distributor Mack & Schuehle and listings with the country's Penny Market discount chain - which has stores in Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy and Romania itself - will help it to double production over the next 10 years.
