Research by the online offers site vouchercodes.co.uk shows men spend on average nearly twice as much as women on on-trade drinking and clubbing.

A survey conducted for the site by YouGov put the average monthly spend on drinking out and clubbing at £40.63, against just £23.25 for women.

Men spend on average £45.85 on eating out, compared with £33.35 for women.

The survey suggested both eating and drinking out accounted for a much bigger slice of consumers' leisure spend than activities such as the cinema, gigs, and going to coffee shops.

Vouchercodes.co.uk managing director Claire Davenport said the survey showed that consumer confidence was higher than it has been for several years.

She added: "Consumer confidence is booming and it's great to see this translating into people using their money to enjoy life.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the leisure industry, with austerity now seemingly well and truly a thing of the past.

"The disparity between what men and women are spending on leisure is interesting to note.

"Specifically for the on-trade, men are spending almost double that of women when drinking out.

"An opportunity for the industry could be to make leisure experiences more appealing and higher in the order of needs for women."
