Dan Jago, who was suspended from his role as Tesco's director of wine, spirits and beer at the height of the fallout from the £263 million shortfall in the retailer's profits, is being reinstated and will return to the retailer in a new role on March 9.

Jago was one of eight senior figures suspended by Tesco as it carried out a review under the management of its new chief executive, Dave Lewis.

The profits blackhole is now the subject of both a police inquiry by the Serious Fraud Sqaud and it is being investigated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Grocery Code Adjudicator is also looking in to the trading behaviour at Tesco with its suppliers.

But, in what will be a welcome boost to Tesco's BWS division, Tesco has now announced that Jago is to return to the business in a new role as category director, group wine. He is going to work alongside Gavin Warburton who has now officially taken over the role as UK category director for beers, wine and spirits, a role he had overseen during Jago's suspension.

In a statement it said: "The Tesco BWS team can confirm Dan Jago will be returning to work in March. The internal investigation into commercial income recognition has now been concluded. Dan was asked to step aside as part of that investigation and will now return to work on Monday 9th March."

It added: "Dan has worked for Tesco for nine years, specialising in the wine as well as the broader drinks category. He has led the wine team to great success and achieved industry recognition for the Tesco wine in-store offering and online proposition."

Jago returns to the wine division at a time when the retailer is still looking for a replacement for Laura Jewell MW who has now taken up her role as UK head of Wine Australia.

Tesco has yet to announce or make a comment about Jewell's replacement.

In December Matt Simister, the chain's purchasing director, was one of the eight suspendend directors who was re-instated by the company after an investigation.
