The Thinking Drinkers look to celebrate "legends of liquor" in new Soho show

Published:  22 January, 2015

The world of drinks has been blessed with some maverick and memorable figures over the years all of which will be celebrated as part of a new show by the Thinking Drinkers, otherwise known as drinks writers Tom Sandham and Ben McFarland.

Over the last few years the duo have built up an alternative career as performers, putting on shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and in London's West End.

Next week they are putting on a new show at London's Soho Theatre called The Thinking Drinkers Guide to the Legends of Liquor, which runs from January 27 to 29.

As Tom Sandham explains "it's a show that celebrates drinking in an entertaining, irreverent but education way and one that will gently guide you off the January wagon with a sip of some discerning spirits and a beer".

He adds: "We regale audiences with tales of the greatest drinkers of all time, with a top eight leader board, building to the moment we reveal the greatest drinker of all time. Our message is 'drink less, but drink better' so we've found great people who did great things and still enjoyed a drink. So the aim is to educate consumers on the drinks and the categories they enjoy in the show, while we leave them with some entertaining sketches, jokes and jaw dropping facts that they can share in the pub."

As well as the jokes and sketches the audience will also get the chance to sample Fuller's Frontier Lager, Plymouth Gin, Belvedere vodka and Jameson whiskey whilst they "explore the liquid lives of history's most extraordinary elbow-benders".

Celebrated drinkers featured in the show stretch from Jesus Christ at one end of the drinking spectrum via Alexander the Great to Winston Churchill, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra and Dorothy Parker.

If you can't catch them in London the Thinking Drinkers are then going on a mini tour of the country and will be appearing at

* January 30 Cheltenham, Town Hall

* February 5 Exeter, Northcott Theatre

* February 7 Chelmsford, Civic Theatre

Tickets for next week's Soho shows cost £15 and are available direct from the Soho Theatre.
