Rioja's José Madrazo Real de Asúa has died

Published:  16 January, 2015

One of Rioja's pioneers, José Madrazo Real de Asúa, of the Spanish winery CVNE, has died.

Well known to the UK wine trade José Madrazo Real de Asúa started his career in wine only after spending much of his early years at sea as a Merchant Marine Captain.

But after the birth of his third child in the late 1960s he returned full time to Spain and began working at CVNE with his cousin, Luis Vallejo, who was chief executive at the time.

José Madrazo Real de Asúa was soon responsible for the vineyard's agricultural practices and also took control of exports to the UK.

In 1973 he helped set up Viñedos del Contino and was general manager there until 1999 before retiring in 2001.

Viñedos del Contino continues to build its worldwide reputation of quality wines from its single vineyard estate.

José Madrazo Real de Asúa leaves a son, Jesús Madrazo who is chief winemaker at Contino.
