John Osborne, managing director of the PLB trading division at Bibendum PLB, talks about the 'year of transformation', how retailers must adapt to the changes in how consumers shop and further supplier consolidation into next year.

How was 2014 for you/your business?

A year of major transformation as we formed the Bibendum PLB Group.

What do you think were the most significant things that happened/ issues/trends that occurred in 2014?

The continued change in consumer shopping trends - less hypermarket/supermarket and more home delivery and convenience - is forcing major change on the retail environment. The unstoppable rise of the discounters has impacted all corners of the UK market - not just the multiple grocers.

What opportunities are you most looking forward to working on in 2015?

Making the new group a major success in the UK wine trade and working with a phenomenal supply base and a really great team.

What are the biggest challenges facing the trade in 2015?

It is clear that range rationalisation and supplier consolidation will happen across the major players in the market. This will provide opportunity for some and is a major risk for peripheral players.

Who are the people/companies/retailers to watch in 2015?

Aldi and Lidl will continue to grow and, dependant on how the multiple grocers position their smaller ranges, this could provide a significant opportunity for on-line and independent operators.

What are you doing for Christmas and New Year?

Spending some quality time with my family.

What will be your favourite tipple over Christmas and New Year?

I am looking forward to opening a bottle of Rioja Reserva from my favourite Rioja bodega, Campillo.

Favourite Christmas film?

Not sure as tend to fall asleep half way through due to too much turkey and xmas pud.

Ideal day out over Christmas period?

Ideally it is a day IN over xmas period with the whole family.......great food, great company and great wine!

What do you want most from Father Christmas?

More time in the day.

New Year's resolution?

Get my golf handicap under 18 (without mulligans).
