Chief of the Week: Joe Wadsack, the BBC's Mr Booze

Published:  19 December, 2014

Hold on to your Santa hats, lock up your drinks cabinet and gird your loins for our Chief of the Week: Mr Joe Wadsack.

To be honest the Claret Pimpernel would be quite happy to have the mighty Joe Wadsack as our "Chief" of any week, but our excuse this time is that news of his first much touted appearance as the new "booze guru" on BBC's Food and Drink progamme is now official.

Yes, he has been enticed back on to our TV screens for the new 10 part series which will see him form a gastro double act with two-star Michelin chef, Tom Kerridge, he of Hand and Flowers fame.

Joe's role is far more than just picking out the wines, the spirits, the beers and even a soft drink or two to go with Kerridge's creations, but he will also be judge and jury over cook-off competitions between Kerridge and his star chef guests, as well as joining in the general bon homie on the programme.

So when you have had your fill of Miranda, Morecambe & Wise repeats (way-ho!), James Bond and seen in the new year with Jools Holland, it will be time to sit down, charge your glass once again for the launch of the new series of  Food and Drink on January 2. 8.30pm on BBC 2 to be precise (7pm for those in Scotland for some reason).

The first programme promises to be a programme best watched in widescreen as not only will it feature the ample frames of Joe and Tom they will be joined by the Hairy Bikers for a full on male bonding session over the stoves of the BBC.

Each programme promises a different theme and the Bikers will be asked to come up with their version of "Express Cooking" and a dish to compete with Kerridge's hearty and wholesome sausage and bean casserole.  We will have to see on the night what they cook up and what wines Mr Wadsack chooses to go with them.

All of us here at Harpers towers are made up for the big man and it will be great to see the great British public get the chance to see  his mercurial wine tasting talent in action.

Anyone who can describe an unbalanced wine as "like putting a piece of Lego in your mouth" deserves to be leading the nation in their wine drinking skills.

The good news is that when he's not on our TV you can catch up with him and share his knowledge, enthusiasm, passion and most of all love of wine and all things booze at major wine and spirits tastings and events.

Here's to you Joe: Harpers final Chief of the Week for 2014.
