Cape Wine Auction hopes to raise thousands more for education in South Afrrica's winelands

Published:  24 November, 2014

Plans are in place for the second AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction which hopes to raise millions of rand to help fund education in the winelands of South Africa.

Following the success of the inaugural event this year, which raised R7.045 million, next year's auction is due to take place between February 13 and February 14, 2015 at the Boschendal Estate.

Renown South African wine experts and authors of the Platter's Guide, John and Erica Platter, have been appointed as the auction's 2015 honorary chairpersons to help coordinate the fundraising efforts.

The Cape Wine Auction was founded by Mike Ratcliffe of Warwick Estate and has already gained strong support in the South Africa wine trade.

The hope is it can now more attract quality, prestigious wines to put up for auction and attract senior wine trade figures from around the world to take part in the auction and help raise money for education in the main wine regions of South Africa.

Next year's event will include a 'Barrel Tasting and Auction Preview' on February 13 with the auction itself taking part on February 14.

Money raised from this year's auction went to educational and up to 10 charitable bodies such as the Pebbles Project, the MAD Charity, the Click Foundation, which are all involved in supporting education in the winelands in some way. Be it from infant development through to technological innovation, the provision of a leadership academy and tertiary educational endowments.

The whole initiative is overseen by the Cape Wine Auction Trust, established in 2014, which is made up of a board of five chosen for their wide business experience. They include: winemaker Michael Jordaan, Ken Kinsey-Quick, Wendy Appelbaum, Siobhan Thompson of Wines of South Africa, and Michael Ratcliffe.

Funds are allocated, on the basis of maximum impact, to charities which have shown that they are sustainable, properly managed and audited, and that their administrative costs are in order.

To date 35 wines have been selected for the 2015 auction which can be seen here.http://www.thecapewineauction.com/the-lots/

Only 300 tickets are available for the auction with places put up for the highest bidder to help raise further money.

Anyone in the world is able to place online bids in the weeks leading up to the auction and then via telephone on the day of the auction.
