Tesco to launch 'wine words' tasting at upcoming Wine Fairs

Published:  01 September, 2014

Following the success of last week's 'wine word-cloud' tasting held on 27 August, which focused on 100 wines from its Finest range, Tesco announced it will roll out similar tastings at its upcoming Wine Fairs.

This is the latest effort for Tesco to help break down the barriers between its consumers and wine, and called on attendees to contribute wine word descriptors which were amalgamated to create a word cloud for each of the 100 wines.  The wine word descriptors had to be a minimum of three words that described each wine. The plan is to use the 'word clouds' to create wine labels for a red, white and rosé wine.

Alison Purdie, Tesco's Wine by the Case marketing manager said: "Based on the success of the event, we  have made the decision to take the idea to our Wine Fairs in Edinburgh and Manchester where visitors will have the chance to taste a red, white and rosé wine and feedback with their 'wine words'. These words will be used to create bespoke wine labels."

Graham Nash, a Tesco wine buyer, said: "It certainly made both Lucy Clements, who was also at the tasting, and me rethink the way we write our back-labels!"

The attendees were trade professionals such as journalists and online communicators as well as Tesco customers and members of the Tesco Wine Community.

The Tesco Wine Fairs are set to begin on the 6th & 7th of September in Birmingham and will run in a number of select cities throughout the UK though early November.  The 'wine words' concept will be at the Manchester Wine Fair which is to be held on October 4th and 5th and at the Edinburgh Wine Fair which is to be held on October 18th & 19th.

Laura Jewell MW, product development manager for Tesco, said: "Our customers love the Tesco Wine Fairs and we are delighted to be able to provide them with this unique tasting opportunity. The continued growth of the Tesco Wine Community and the advances in digital media means that more and more people are hearing about the fairs and as the word spreads, the number of visitors continues to increase. This year we are anticipating almost 15,000 people will attend across the five fairs."
