The global rum category has grown by 40% over the last 10 years and 24% in the UK, according to a new trade report, The Decade of Rum, produced by West Indies Rum and Spirits Producers'Association (WIRSPA).

The full report can be accessed in the Insights section of Harpers.co.uk and provides an overview of the world rum market including insights and opinions from some of the world's leading rum experts. It has been produced by WIRSPA as part of its Authentic Caribbean Rum Marque initiative to raise awareness and promote authentic Caribbean rums.

It looks at the key global rum trends between 2000 and 2012 and in particular the rise of golden rums, which have enjoyed an 87% increase in the UK alone between 2002 and 2012.

The report also includes feedback from leading rum experts following a series of round table discussions with more than 30 leading international spirits experts including journalists, bloggers, bartenders and rum commentators. Held between July and October 2013 in London, Madrid, Berlin and Milan they also included input from participants from France, Germany, Spain, Holland and Belgium.

The Decade of Rum also includes market data from a number of research bodies, including International Wine & Spirit Research, and features country-by-country data, market trends and how individual styles of rum have performed in different countries. It also looks at the history of Caribbean rum and how it has evolved over the years.
