Bowmore offers limited edition 50-year whisky for £16,000 a bottle

Published:  22 November, 2013

Bowmore, founded in 1779 and Islay's first producer of single malt Scotch whisky, is releasing 200 bottles of limited edition, 50-year-old single malt, for £16,000 per bottle.

The whisky was distilled in December 1962 and has been maturing in old bourbon hogshead casks for the last 50 years. It will be released over the next four years.

For the hefty sum of £16,000 every buyer will get a bottle that is hand-blown by the glass sculpting studio Glasstorm, and comes with a neck collar and cork top that is crafted by metal artists from Fattorini Silversmiths and is cased in a handmade Scottish Elmwood cabinet built by master carpenter Peter Toaig.

Eddie MacAffer, Bowmore's Master Distiller, said: "This 50 year old Bowmore is yet another wonderful example of the older whiskies that the distillery has matured in out No.1 Vaults warehouse, right on the shores of Loch Indaal."

Bowmore is one of a few distilleries that still produces its own floor malted barley and uses traditional machinery to produce its whiskies.

The first three bottles will be released to the Whisky Shop, Hedonism, and the Royal Mile.
