Cognac exports surge ahead

Exports of Cognac in 2006 were the third highest on record. According to figures released by the Bureau National Interprofessionel du Cognac (BNIC), 152 million bottles of Cognac were exported worldwide, representing an increase of 7.2% by volume and 11% in value compared with 2005. These volumes have only been bettered by sales in 1989 and 1990.

Cognac generic body to be split up

Big changes are planned for the organisation of the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac (BNIC).
Despite local press reports, the BNIC is not being wound up, but a plan has been devised by French agriculture minister Dominique Bussereau to split it up into three comits de gestion (management boards).
Furthermore, growers will have to decide in advance what to do with their crop - be it for Cognac production, Pineau des Charentes, table wine or for table grapes.
At the moment, the BNIC has committees covering areas such as viticulture and growers, as well as a decision-making committee that is made up of growers and producers - in a 50/50 split.

Rum producer backs Flintoff testimonial

He is the hot favourite for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, and Andrew Freddie' Flintoff got his hands on another trophy - The Cockspur Cup - when the rum producer signed up as a partner for the all-rounder's testimonial year in 2006. The cup goes to the winner of the English Cricket Board's national knockout competition, and Cockspur is on course for a 500,000 investment in the English game. The brand is represented in the UK by Halewood International.
